Night as Child

HEAR INTO THE QUIET here,
Knowing it's not really,

But only an illusion of quiet,

With noise pushed off into the distance,

But not over the edge

Of far enough,

And muffled by the silken moonlight.

..................................................Nightness

Settles into you with the rhythmic

Unresounding pounding factory,

And the hushless rush of distant traffic,

Mixed into the crickets' ceaseless chirping,

And the foggy breathing

Of the forest's sleeping monsters

Menacing softly

In  your favorite fearful dreams.
