Night Sketch: Heat & Rain

1.

The sounds of thunder and rain moving away
Confuse with the sound of the fan

Rumbling uselessly in the window.

The light of my lamp mingles

With the fading lightning emphasizing

In needless punctuation,

The embracing heat.

Shadows curl around the room

And lie in the corners

Like sleepy, sulking cats.

2.

This summer night clings viciously

To its day collected heat,

Eluding the cooling of the evening rain.

Instead of relief, there only is steam,

Stretching lazily along the gleaming streets

Where constellations of streetlights

Are captured in puddles on black pavement:

A cheap imitation of the infinite night

Hidden behind the black and grey

Bellowing bellies of empty clouds.
