If, Then, Instead

if life was heaven on earth
if life was like a day at the beach
if life was like living on the leisure edge
if life was soft like butter
if life was sweetened cereal

instead of butter on toast burnt falling butter side down
instead of sand on the shore sore hot against bare soles
instead of edged like a razor shaving against skin's grain
..... ..... .....leaving us redfaced and raw
then
.....it would be lived courageless
.....unlearning
.....stunted
for comfy cushioned existence
is not life
but a life sentence
.....paroleless stupidity
.....demeaning
.....pointless
.....hell
.....ish
